Which Amazon Fire Tablet to Buy: HD 10 or Alexa Tablet

Which Fire Tablet to Buy: Fire HD 10, Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Kids Tablet 8 and 11

Amazon's tablet range looks different in 2026. The Fire HD 10 is still on sale, but the comparison chart on Amazon's own listing shows the Fire HD 8 and Fire Max 11 as not available, and Amazon now sells an Alexa Tablet 8, 11 and 12 Pro that its listings say run Android 16 with Google Play. The Kids editions have changed in the same way. This guide sets out what Amazon UK sells now, how the models differ, and what the switch means for apps, ads and children.

For most people the Alexa Tablet 11 is the Amazon tablet to buy: Amazon lists an 11-inch 2.5K screen, 8GB of memory, 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Google Play on Android 16. The Fire HD 10 costs less and takes a microSD card, but it uses the Amazon Appstore. Pick the Alexa Tablet 8 for a compact screen, the 12 Pro for a keyboard, and a Kids Tablet for children.

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon's Fire HD 10 comparison chart lists the Fire HD 8 and Fire Max 11 as not available, while the 2023 Fire HD 10 itself is still on sale.
  • Amazon's Fire HD 10 listing says Google Play is not supported on Fire tablets, while its Alexa Tablet and Kids Tablet listings say they run Android 16 with Google Play.
  • Amazon's security update pages cover the Fire HD 10 until at least 31 December 2029 and every Alexa Tablet and Kids Tablet until at least 31 December 2032.
  • Amazon's warranty page gives the two-year worry-free guarantee to Fire Kids and Fire Kids Pro tablets, while the new Kids Tablet 8 and 11 listings give a one-year limited warranty.
  • Amazon's help pages say lockscreen ads can be removed later for a one-time payment through Manage Your Content and Devices.

Alexa Tablets Now Sit Alongside the Fire HD 10

On Amazon's Fire HD 10 listing, the comparison chart now shows the Fire HD 8 and Fire Max 11 as not available, and the Fire 7 is not on it at all. The Fire HD 10 itself, the 13th-generation 2023 model, is still on sale, with 32GB and 64GB options on its listing.

Alongside it, Amazon sells the Alexa Tablet family. Amazon's comparison chart for the range lists the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, with the 12 Pro offered with a standard or a Nanomatte anti-glare screen. Amazon's spec sheets list each as a first-generation 2026 release running Android 16.

Children's tablets have changed too. Amazon's Fire Kids comparison chart lists the Fire HD 8 Kids, HD 8 Kids Pro, HD 10 Kids and HD 10 Kids Pro as not available, and Amazon now sells the Amazon Kids Tablet 8 and 11, each in ages 3+ and ages 6+ editions. A Peppa Pig limited edition Fire HD 8 Kids, bundled with a screen protector, is still listed.

Screens, Chips and Batteries Separate the Models

Screen size is the first split. Amazon's spec sheets list an 8.7-inch 1340 x 800 screen on the Alexa Tablet 8, an 11-inch 2.5K screen at up to 90Hz on the Alexa Tablet 11, and a 12-inch 2.8K screen at up to 120Hz on the 12 Pro. The Fire HD 10 listing gives a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 display.

Inside, the Alexa Tablet 8 and 11 share a MediaTek 8189 8-core chip at up to 2GHz, with 4GB and 8GB of memory. Amazon gives the 12 Pro a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 at up to 3.25GHz with 8GB or 16GB, and the Fire HD 10 an octa-core chip at up to 2.05GHz with 3GB.

Battery and cameras climb the same ladder. Amazon quotes up to 14, 15 and 16 hours of video for the 8, 11 and 12 Pro, and up to 13 hours of mixed use for the Fire HD 10. Rear cameras run from 5 MP on the Fire HD 10 to 8 MP on the Alexa Tablet 8 and 11 and 13 MP on the 12 Pro.

Fire Tablets Use the Amazon Appstore and Alexa Tablets Use Google Play

Apps are the biggest change. Amazon's Fire HD 10 listing says that Google Play is not supported on Amazon Fire tablets, and Amazon's help page on installing apps points Fire tablet owners to the Store in the Apps or Games app. Amazon's Appstore help page lists Fire TV and Fire Tablet as the devices it runs on, and its Appstore FAQ says the Appstore on Android was discontinued from 20 August 2025.

The Alexa Tablet and Kids Tablet listings go the other way. Each runs Android 16, and Amazon promises over a million apps on Google Play, with Prime Video, Kindle and Audible ready after one sign-in. For anyone who needs a Google Play app, that decides it.

Update support differs too. Amazon's Fire tablet security update page covers the Fire HD 10 (2023) until at least 31 December 2029. Its Alexa Tablet page covers every Alexa Tablet and Kids Tablet until at least 31 December 2032, with up to seven Android OS upgrades for the 11-inch and 12-inch models and up to three for the 8-inch ones.

Storage, Stylus and Keyboard Support Vary by Model

Storage works differently on the two families. Amazon's Fire HD 10 spec sheet lists 32GB or 64GB plus a microSD slot for up to 1TB more, while the Alexa Tablet spec sheets list no microSD slot. Amazon gives the Alexa Tablet 8 64GB or 128GB and the 12 Pro 128GB or 256GB.

Amazon contradicts itself on the Alexa Tablet 11. Its listings sell a 64GB version, yet the 11's spec sheet and the range comparison chart list only 128GB. The chart also gives the 11 DisplayPort and USB 3.2 Gen 1 over USB-C, where the 11's own spec sheet says USB 2.0 with no DisplayPort.

For writing and typing, Amazon's chart lists the Alexa Tablet Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard for the 12 Pro, a Maxeye pen and Bluetooth keyboard case for the 11, and only a case for the 8. The keyboard's listing says it snaps on magnetically, needs no Bluetooth or charging, and works only with the 12 Pro. The Fire HD 10 listing names USI 2.0 stylus support and a Bluetooth keyboard case.

Kids Tablets Come With a Case, a Year of Kids+ and Parental Controls

Each Amazon Kids Tablet listing bundles the tablet, a one-year Kids+ subscription and a case: a kid-proof bumper on the ages 3+ editions and a slim hard case on the ages 6+ editions. Amazon says Kids+ then auto-renews. The ages 3+ listings name Peppa Pig and CBeebies; the ages 6+ ones mention Google Classroom. Amazon's older Fire Kids chart split similarly, with Kids editions for ages 3 to 7 and Kids Pro for ages 6 to 12.

Parents run it from the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard app, which Amazon's help page says sets time limits and controls the store, content and web browsing. The Kids Tablet listings add parent approval for Google Play apps.

The guarantee has changed. Amazon's warranty page gives Fire Kids and Kids Pro tablets a two-year worry-free guarantee, and the Fire HD 8 Kids listing says Amazon will replace a broken tablet free. The guarantee's terms cover defects in materials and workmanship and exclude accident, misuse and neglect, so the two do not match. The new Kids Tablet listings give a one-year limited warranty.

Lockscreen Ads Can Be Removed Later and WiFi Setup Is Quick

The Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11 and Fire HD 10 listings each offer a with Ads and a without Ads configuration, and Amazon explains that the with Ads option shows sponsored screensavers on the lock screen and in sleep mode. Amazon's 12 Pro listings show no ads option. Changing your mind later is allowed. Amazon's help page says to open Manage Your Content and Devices, select the tablet and choose Remove offers under Special Offers, and Amazon takes a one-time payment from your 1-Click payment method to cover the difference between the two prices.

On a Fire tablet, Amazon's help page says to swipe down from the top of the screen, tap and hold the Wi-Fi button, pick a network and enter its password. Amazon's Frustration-Free Setup FAQ says select Alexa and Fire tablets can join using WiFi passwords saved to Amazon. For speed, Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 on the Alexa Tablet 8, 11 and both Kids Tablets, Wi-Fi 6E on the 12 Pro, and dual-band Wi-Fi without Wi-Fi 6 on the Fire HD 10.

Five Amazon Tablets for Different Buyers

Two caveats come first. Amazon's spec sheets list the charger as sold separately for every model here, rated up to 18 W for the Alexa Tablet 8 and Kids Tablets and up to 27 W for the 11 and 12 Pro, so check the USB-C charger guide. And by Amazon's own account, the Fire HD 10 cannot run apps from Google Play.

The Alexa Tablet 11 with 128GB is the all-round pick. The Fire HD 10 is the budget choice and the one to buy for microSD storage. Amazon pitches the Alexa Tablet 8 for one-handed reading at 329 g, and the 12 Pro is the model for the Pro Keyboard and Pro Pen. For young children, the Kids Tablet 8 ages 3+ comes with its bumper and a year of Kids+.

For books alone, the Kindle guide covers e-readers, while the iPad guide and Samsung tablet guide cover the alternatives. Amazon also pitches the Alexa Tablets as a smart home control screen, and the Echo guide covers its speakers and displays.
